1. How often can I use my Medicare benefits toward shoes?
Answer: Medicare benefits apply toward one pair of shoes and up to three pair of inserts or other modifications per calendar year for diabetics who qualify.
2. Do I have to wait a full year between receiving shoes through Medicare?
Answer: The benefits are available after January 1 each year for qualifying diabetics.
3. What qualifies a diabetic for the therapeutic shoe benefit?
Answer: There are several conditions which may qualify a person for the therapeutic shoe benefit. Prior amputations, ulcers, foot deformities, pre-ulcerative calluses, circulatory problems and neuropathy are some. These conditions are listed on the statement your doctor fills out to qualify you; and, your doctor must check your feet and document the order in his chart.
